Tropical Storm Crising Disrupts Maritime Travel Nationwide
More than 600 passengers, truck drivers, and cargo helpers were left stranded at various ports across the Philippines as Tropical Storm Crising caused significant interruptions in maritime travel, sources said on Friday. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) issued a maritime safety advisory reporting widespread delays.
Between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. on July 18, the PCG monitored 29 ports nationwide. They recorded a total of 649 individuals, 248 rolling cargoes, and 52 vessels stranded due to the storm. Additionally, 24 vessels and 12 motorbancas sought shelter to avoid the rough seas and strong winds brought by the typhoon.
Eastern Visayas Bears the Brunt of Stranding
Eastern Visayas experienced the highest number of stranded passengers, with 358 people, 165 rolling cargoes, and three vessels stuck in the ports of Maasin, Benit, and Padre Burgos. Four vessels in this region chose to take shelter amid the adverse weather.
In Northern Mindanao, 46 individuals, 21 rolling cargoes, and eight vessels were stranded at the ports of Plaridel, Balingoan, Benoni, and Balbagon. Meanwhile, Southwestern Mindanao reported 124 stranded passengers, 24 rolling cargoes, and 16 vessels in ports including Zamboanga, Sangali, Dapitan, Galas Feeder, Nabilid, and Lamao. Five vessels and seven motorbancas took refuge in safer waters.
Other Regions Also Affected by Storm Disruptions
Southern Tagalog’s Real Port saw 22 stranded individuals along with three vessels that took shelter. The Bicol region reported 98 stranded people, 34 rolling cargoes, and seven vessels at ports in Virac, Bacacay, Tabaco, and San Andres. Here, one vessel and one motorbanca sought shelter from the storm.
Southern Visayas had no stranded passengers, but four rolling cargoes and 16 vessels remained stuck at the ports of Siquijor, Tambisan, Larena, Dumaguete, Cadiz Viejo Feeder, and Pulupandan. Six vessels and four motorbancas took shelter in this region.
On Palawan Island, one vessel was stranded at Pag-asa Port, while five vessels sheltered near Barangays Funda in Cuyo, Magsaysay in Rizal, and Bancalaan in Balabac. Western Visayas also reported one vessel stranded at Dapdap Pier.
The persistent Tropical Storm Crising continues to challenge maritime operations nationwide, delaying travel and shipping schedules. Authorities remain vigilant and advise the public to monitor updates closely.
