Tropical Storm Emong Forms in Philippine Area
MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Storm Emong has officially formed, intensifying from a tropical depression, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported on Wednesday. This development marks the second tropical storm currently active within the Philippine area of responsibility.
Alongside Emong, Tropical Depression Dante has also strengthened into a tropical storm, intensifying concerns for residents and authorities alike. Both storms are being closely monitored as they approach various parts of the country.
Storm Locations and Movements
According to Pagasa’s 4 p.m. update, Emong was located about 120 kilometers west of Laoag City in Ilocos Norte at 2 p.m. The storm carries maximum sustained winds reaching 65 kilometers per hour with gusts up to 80 kilometers per hour. Emong is currently moving southwest at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Dante was spotted 845 kilometers east-northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon, traveling north-northwest at 25 kilometers per hour. It shares the same wind speeds and gustiness as Emong.
Potential New Threat Outside Philippine Area
Aside from the two storms, meteorologists have also noted a low-pressure area (LPA) labeled 07i outside the Philippine area of responsibility. This LPA has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours, signaling the need for vigilance in the coming days.
Flooding and Safety Measures Amid Storms
Strong rains brought by the southwest monsoon, locally known as the “habagat,” have already caused significant flooding in parts of Metro Manila and nearby regions. One striking image showed a man walking alone along the flood-ridden stretch of Kalaw Avenue in Manila, capturing a selfie to document his solitary passage through the rising waters.
Due to the continuing heavy rains and flooding, government offices and both public and private schools suspended work and classes on July 23 in many affected areas. Local leaders emphasized the importance of safety and urged residents to stay alert and prepared for possible further disruptions.
