Tropical Storm Podul Approaches Philippine Area of Responsibility
Tropical Storm Podul continues to hold its strength as it nears the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), local weather authorities reported early Saturday. The storm remains a significant weather system, prompting close monitoring by meteorological agencies.
As of 4 a.m. Saturday, Podul was located approximately 2,220 kilometers east of Extreme Northern Luzon. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) confirmed that the storm is moving west-northwest at 15 kilometers per hour, with sustained winds reaching 85 kilometers per hour and gusts up to 105 kilometers per hour.
Storm Strength and Forecasts
“At present, the storm still has no effect on any part of the country,” Pagasa weather specialist Grace Castañeda said in Filipino. However, she cautioned that Podul is expected to gain strength in the coming days. “It will continue to strengthen. Before it enters the PAR, it may intensify into a typhoon,” she added.
Podul is forecast to maintain its westward path and is expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility either Sunday night or Monday morning. Once it crosses into the PAR, it will receive the local name “Gorio.” Despite current projections, Castañeda emphasized the uncertainty surrounding the storm’s development and path, noting that changes remain possible.
Preparedness and Monitoring
Authorities continue to monitor Podul closely to provide timely updates and warnings to affected communities. Local officials and meteorologists urge residents to stay informed and prepare accordingly as the storm approaches. The evolving situation underscores the need for vigilance amid the typhoon season.
