Tropical Storms Dante and Emong Slightly Intensify in Philippines

Tropical Storms Dante and Emong Slightly Intensify

MANILA, Philippines — Tropical storms Dante and Emong have slightly intensified, sources said. According to recent updates, authorities continue to monitor their paths closely as they approach Philippine areas.

Dante was last located 815 kilometers east-northeast of extreme northern Luzon. It carries maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour (km/h) near its center, with gusts reaching up to 90 km/h. The storm is moving northwestward at 15 km/h.

Forecast and Movement of Tropical Storm Dante

Experts forecast that Dante will maintain a general northwestward track over the Philippine Sea for the next 24 hours. Afterward, it is expected to veer west-northwest toward the Ryukyu Islands and eventually the East China Sea. Officials indicated that Dante may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by the afternoon or evening of July 24.

Current Status of Tropical Storm Emong

Meanwhile, Emong was last spotted 235 kilometers west of Sinait, Ilocos Sur. It currently has winds of 85 km/h near its center, with gusts up to 105 km/h, and is moving southwestward at 15 km/h. Due to Emong’s strength and trajectory, local authorities have issued several tropical cyclone wind signals to affected areas.

Wind Signals and Affected Areas

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 has been raised in the northwestern part of Pangasinan, including Bolinao, Anda, Bani, Agno, and Burgos.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 covers a wider region: Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, central and remaining northwestern Pangasinan towns like Dasol, Alaminos City, Mabini, and others; northern Zambales municipalities Santa Cruz and Candelaria; and several provinces such as Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Benguet, and Ifugao.

Additionally, parts of Cagayan including the Babuyan Islands, northern and western Isabela, and western Nueva Vizcaya are also under Signal No. 1.

Emong’s Path and Intensification

Sources said Emong is expected to move generally southwestward and may loop over the West Philippine Sea by July 24. This movement is influenced by its interaction with Tropical Storm Dante. The storm could make landfall over the Ilocos Region and pass near the Babuyan Islands.

Authorities warned that Emong could strengthen into a severe tropical storm by tomorrow morning. They also noted that it might intensify further into a typhoon before making landfall.
