Marikina City, Philippines — A trailer truck driver involved in a deadly six-vehicle crash in Barangay Fortune, Marikina, issued a public apology Thursday following the accident that claimed three lives and left ten others injured.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. Wednesday when a trailer truck ascending an uphill road reportedly lost power, rolled backward, and overturned—crushing multiple vehicles behind it. Among those damaged were two jeepneys, two cars, and one SUV.
The driver, a 55-year-old man transporting tobacco and cotton from Manila to Marikina, is now in police custody and faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicides, injuries, and property damage.
“I felt the truck weakening. It couldn’t climb anymore. I stepped on the brakes, but they didn’t respond,” he said in an emotional statement.
“I didn’t mean for this to happen. It was an accident. I’m deeply sorry. I’m only human.”
By 6 a.m. Thursday, the crash site had been cleared of all damaged vehicles. Authorities continue to investigate the mechanical condition of the truck and assess whether negligence or system failure played a role.
