Fatal Crash Involving Three Cargo Trucks on Maharlika Highway
ATIMONAN, Quezon – A tragic accident on the Maharlika Highway in Barangay Balubad left one truck driver dead and four others injured after a collision involving three cargo trucks on Friday afternoon, May 16. The incident occurred when one of the trucks lost control and caused a multi-vehicle crash.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the driver who lost his life was not immediately named out of respect for his family’s wishes. Four others were injured in the accident, including driver Rody Quicao and helpers Cheryl Bulay, 37, Elmer Tantunan, 34, as well as the deceased driver’s assistant, Paulo Ocampo, 23.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Collision
Investigations revealed that two of the trucks, operated by drivers Rene Maratas and Rody Quicao, were traveling toward Manila when the fatal collision happened. Meanwhile, the truck driven by the deceased was headed for Bicol.
The fatal truck reportedly lost control and veered into the opposite lane, directly colliding with the vehicles of Maratas and Quicao. Fortunately, Maratas escaped without injuries, but both Quicao and the other drivers were trapped inside their cabins after the impact.
Rescue and Medical Response
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and managed to extract the trapped drivers. The injured were immediately transported to a nearby hospital. Medical teams declared the driver who lost control deceased upon arrival, while Quicao and the three helpers are currently receiving treatment and recovering from their injuries.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the accident, with community leaders noting the dangers posed by large cargo trucks on busy highways. Efforts to improve road safety and prevent similar incidents are underway.
