Truck Driver License Suspended After Fatal Laguna Crash
A truck driver’s license has been suspended for 90 days following a tragic accident in Laguna, where a truck with failed brakes crashed, killing a fruit vendor and injuring two pedestrians. Officials reported that the incident occurred along the national highway of Mabitac on August 29.
Details of the Incident
According to local authorities, the truck lost its brakes, causing the driver to jump out before the vehicle collided with a house. Community members said the crash resulted in the death of a 65-year-old fruit vendor and left two pedestrians injured.
Investigation and Legal Actions
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) issued a show-cause order to the truck driver, requiring him to explain why he should not be held accountable for reckless driving and being unfit to operate a motor vehicle. At the same time, the vehicle’s registered owner was summoned to clarify why they should not face penalties for employing a reckless driver and to provide proof of the truck’s proper maintenance and inspections.
Strict Enforcement of Truck Safety
LTO Chief Atty. Vigor Mendoza emphasized the importance of strict enforcement of road safety laws for trucks. “This is the reason why we have been strict and aggressive in our enforcement of existing laws involving trucks. From having worn-out tires to overloading, we have been conducting surprise inspections to ensure that these people comply with road safety rules and regulations,” Mendoza shared.
Ongoing Truck Inspections Nationwide
Between January and July 2025, the LTO apprehended over 9,000 trucks nationwide for overloading violations. Additionally, hundreds of trucks were penalized for issues like worn-out tires and other safety infractions, officials reported.
The incident in Laguna serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with vehicle maintenance neglect and reckless driving. Authorities continue to prioritize road safety through vigilant inspections and strict penalties.
