Tsunami Advisory Triggers Class Suspensions in Rapu-Rapu Albay
In Rapu-Rapu, Albay, authorities suspended classes at all levels on the afternoon of July 30, 2025, following a tsunami advisory issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The early warning prompted immediate action to protect residents in this island municipality.
The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) issued Advisory No. 001, which not only ordered class suspensions but also urged those living in coastal areas to move to higher ground as a safety measure.
Local Leaders Mobilize Evacuations for Safety
Local officials swiftly responded to the advisory. Mayor Rommel “Otoy” Galicia instructed residents to evacuate as soon as they hear the warning bell. He identified several safe zones, including Rapu-Rapu National High School, Rapu-Rapu Central School, Sta. Florentina Parish Church, the municipal training center, and selected two-story houses located away from the shoreline.
“Designated evacuation sites include Rapu-Rapu National High School, Rapu-Rapu Central School, Sta. Florentina Parish Church, the municipal training center, and identified two-storey houses situated far from the shoreline,” the mayor said during a phone interview.
Neighboring Areas Stay Alert Amid Tsunami Advisory
In nearby Camarines Sur, Governor Luis Raymund Villafuerte encouraged residents to remain vigilant through social media updates. While he reassured the public that there was no threat of a destructive tsunami, he emphasized the importance of safety precautions.
“There is no threat of a destructive tsunami, but safety precautions are still necessary,” local leaders noted.
Phivolcs Issues Tsunami Warning for Albay Province
Phivolcs’ Tsunami Information No. 2 bulletin forecasted waves under one meter high could impact parts of Albay. The first waves were expected to arrive between 1:20 p.m. and 2:40 p.m., possibly lasting for several hours. This early warning allowed communities to prepare and take precautionary measures.
