Police Officers Relieved Amid Suspect Death Probe
Authorities have relieved twelve police officers from their posts following allegations surrounding the death of a suspect who reportedly suffocated in Pasay City. The incident has prompted swift administrative actions as investigations continue.
Officials reported that the twelve officers were reassigned to their respective administrative holding units pending further inquiry. This measure aims to ensure an impartial investigation into the circumstances of the suspect’s death.
Breakdown of Officers Involved
Of the twelve officers relieved, six were assigned to Pasay Substation 5, five hailed from the Southern Police District (SPD) Mobile Force Battalion (MFB), and one belonged to the National Capital Region MFB. Local authorities emphasized that these personnel are currently not active in the field during the investigation.
Before their reassignment, criminal complaints for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide were already filed against the officers at the city prosecutor’s office. Additionally, two members of the SPD MFB face separate charges for alleged maltreatment of a prisoner, further complicating the case.
Details of the Incident
Community members said that seven of the twelve officers had arrested a 29-year-old resident from Pampanga. The suspect was accused of causing a disturbance and damaging property at a convenience store located in Barangay 75, Zone 10, Pasay on August 12.
According to reports, CCTV footage captured the suspect entering the store’s stockroom, where officers were seen pinning him down. The video also revealed that the victim was struck as he became unruly, including being punched in the back.
These revelations have raised concerns about the conduct of the officers involved, prompting public calls for accountability and transparency in the ongoing investigation.
