Fatal Accident Strikes Two Brothers in Camarines Sur
In a tragic incident on Friday afternoon, two brothers riding a motorcycle lost their lives when an acacia tree suddenly fell on them in Ocampo, Camarines Sur. The unexpected event occurred along the Gov. Fuentebella Highway in Barangay New Moriones at around 12:05 p.m.
Major Bernardo Peñero, chief of the Ocampo police, confirmed the incident and identified the victims as Christian Benlayo, 36, and Freddy Mar, 33. “They were pinned by the tree and died on the spot,” Peñero reported in a phone interview. This heartbreaking accident highlights the dangers posed by unstable trees during severe weather conditions.
Unstable Tree Caused by Rot and Heavy Rains
Authorities believe the acacia tree collapsed because it was weakened by internal rot. Continuous rains over recent days likely added weight to the already compromised tree, causing it to topple. “Acacia wood is prone to decay at the center, and the rain probably made it even heavier,” Peñero explained.
Camarines Sur has been experiencing moderate to heavy rains since Thursday due to Tropical Storm Crising, which may have contributed to the tree’s instability. Local officials warn residents to stay alert as weather conditions remain unfavorable.
Community Mourns Loss Amid Storm Conditions
The tragic deaths of the two brothers serve as a grim reminder of the hazards that come with severe weather in the region. Local leaders encourage caution and vigilance, especially when traveling through areas with large trees or unstable structures during storms.
