Two Cargo Vessels Collide in Calbayog Amid Strong Winds
TACLOBAN CITY – Early Friday morning, two cargo vessels collided at Manguinoo Port in Calbayog City, Samar, reportedly due to strong winds. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) confirmed the incident, highlighting the need for caution in adverse weather conditions.
The Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) in Calbayog received reports around 8 a.m. from Melcha Lledo, manager of the local Ports Authority Terminal Management Office. She informed authorities of a collision involving the MV Vinh Quang and MV Poseidon 52 at the port.
Details of the Collision and Response
Initial investigations revealed that the Vietnamese-flagged MV Vinh Quang was anchored when the Philippine-flagged MV Poseidon 52, maneuvering in rough weather, struck it. Both vessels remained afloat and stable after the collision.
Personnel from CGSS Calbayog and the Coast Guard Community Outpost in Manguinoo promptly responded to assess the situation on site. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or oil spills connected to the accident.
Vessels and Cargo Information
While the Coast Guard’s initial report did not specify the number of crew members or cargo details, sources noted that MV Vinh Quang is a bulk carrier typically transporting dry goods like construction materials. Meanwhile, MV Poseidon 52 operates as a general cargo vessel on regional trade routes.
The PCG has launched a maritime safety investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the collision and assess any damage to the vessels or port infrastructure. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of heightened vigilance among ship operators, especially during docking or navigation in poor weather.
