Two dams open gates in Benguet due to heavy rains
MANILA, Philippines — Two dams in Benguet province have opened their gates as heavy rains continue to pour, officials said. The Ambuklao and Binga dams responded to increased water levels caused by Severe Tropical Storm Bising.
According to sources, the Ambuklao dam opened one gate at 8:00 a.m., releasing 47.23 cubic meters per second (cms) of water. Its water level reached 751.39 meters. Meanwhile, Binga dam opened two gates at the same time, with a combined discharge of 113.87 cms and a water level of 573.45 meters.
Communities braced for possible flooding
The overflow from Ambuklao is expected to affect Ambuclao village in the town of Bokod. Similarly, Binga’s release may impact Dalupurip and Tinongdan villages in Itogon town. Local disaster risk and management councils in these areas have been urged to take all necessary precautions to safeguard residents.
As of Monday morning, Severe Tropical Storm Bising had exited the Philippine area of responsibility. However, the southwest monsoon continues to bring rainfall to parts of Luzon, with forecasts predicting 10 to 25 millimeters of rain on Tuesday.
Rainfall and safety updates
Officials recorded an average basin rainfall of 34 millimeters for the two dams on Monday. Given the ongoing weather conditions, authorities remain vigilant to prevent flooding and ensure public safety.
