Filipino Military Cadets Complete Pre-Commissioning Training
Two Filipino military cadets have successfully completed their pre-commissioning training at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun, India. Second Lieutenants Anthony Ehapon and Len John Kent Valbarez received their rank insignias in a ceremony led by Lt. Gen. Nagendra Singh, the IMA commandant, on June 14. This achievement highlights the growing ties between the Philippines and India.
Ehapon and Valbarez belong to the IMA Regular Class 156. Both officers previously trained at the Philippine Army Officer Candidate School. They spent 18 months in India, participating in the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program throughout 2024. This program provides valuable international military experience and training for Filipino officers.
Reviving a Historic Partnership
Local defense officials noted that the two cadets represent the second generation of Philippine Army officers trained at the prestigious Indian Military Academy. Although two Philippine Army officer cadets completed the same IMA training in 1974, the program was not sustained for over five decades. Their recent graduation marks a renewed commitment to strengthening military cooperation between the two nations.
The Philippine Defense and Armed Forces Attaché in India (PhilDAFA-India) emphasized that the success of these officers is more than an individual accomplishment. It signifies a meaningful step toward building a more capable, skilled, and internationally connected Philippine Army. This progress also reflects the deepening strategic partnership between the Philippines and India.
Celebrating 75 Years of Diplomatic Relations
The training completion coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and India in 2024. This milestone underscores the enduring friendship and cooperation shared by the two countries across multiple sectors, including defense.
The Philippine officers’ experience at the Indian Military Academy not only enhances their skills but also strengthens bilateral ties. As both nations continue to collaborate, such programs pave the way for more joint initiatives and mutual support in the future.
