Tragic Fire Claims Two Minors in Sta Mesa
A devastating fire in Sta. Mesa, Manila has resulted in the confirmed deaths of two minors, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) on Tuesday, May 20. The two young victims, who were cousins, were reported missing during the blaze that erupted in the residential area.
Local sources said the children were last seen inside their home, which was engulfed by flames that spread rapidly through the closely packed neighborhood. The BFP reported that the fire started at 3:42 p.m. along Road 12 Phase 1, Barangay 628, Sta. Mesa. It quickly escalated to a fourth alarm due to the tightly clustered homes constructed with light materials.
Fire Impact Leaves 100 Families Displaced
By 6:50 p.m., the fire was declared out after destroying more than 30 houses. This disaster displaced around 100 families from the affected area. Among those left homeless is Rehein Charisse, who appealed for public assistance. She requested donations of clothing, financial aid, and other essentials to help survivors rebuild.
Community leaders and local authorities from the Manila Department of Social Welfare (DSW) have mobilized to provide temporary shelters and relief support. Various volunteer groups and relief agencies are coordinating efforts to assist the displaced residents.
Damage to Polytechnic University of the Philippines
Apart from residential losses, firefighters confirmed that two buildings belonging to the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) suffered partial damage. Emergency responders had to forcibly break through some walls to reach homes deep within the block, which complicated rescue and containment efforts.
Ongoing Investigation Into Fire Cause
Investigators continue to work on determining what triggered the fire. While the exact cause remains unknown, officials are closely examining the site and gathering witness accounts to understand the incident better.
The tragedy highlights the vulnerability of densely populated communities built with flammable materials and the urgent need for enhanced fire safety measures.
