Two Minors Held for Bullying at Basilan National High School

In a troubling incident at Basilan National High School, two minors were apprehended for bullying a fellow student, local authorities reported. The case, which took place in late June, highlights ongoing concerns about safety and discipline in schools.

The suspects, now identified as children in conflict with the law (CICL), were immediately transferred to a CICL center. This action complies with the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006, which governs the treatment of young offenders in the Philippines.

Details of the Bullying Incident and Police Response

According to sources, the victim’s father filed a complaint with the Isabela City Police Station in Basilan on June 26. He revealed that his son was coerced by the suspects to smoke. When the boy refused, he was subjected to physical violence, including punches, kicks, and having his head repeatedly slammed against a wall.

Worryingly, one suspect reportedly brandished a knife and threatened the victim with stabbing. The victim suffered serious injuries and was initially treated at a hospital in Isabela City before being moved to a medical facility in Zamboanga City for advanced care.

Investigation and Community Involvement

Following the complaint, a police team visited Basilan National High School and coordinated with the school’s guidance office for further inquiry. A case conference involving the suspects’ parents and investigators uncovered that both minors had prior behavioral issues and had not returned home after the incident.

Authorities, with assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), successfully located the suspects. The school and DSWD will provide counseling and intervention programs aimed at rehabilitation and preventing future incidents.

The swift response by local law enforcement and social welfare agencies underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing bullying and ensuring student safety.
