Two Siblings as Missing Link in Sabungeros Abduction
Authorities have detained two siblings of whistleblower Julie “Dondon” Patidongan, alias Totoy, abroad, marking a significant breakthrough in the case involving the abduction of cockfighting enthusiasts, locally known as sabungeros. The Philippine National Police (PNP) confirmed that these brothers could be the missing link in this long-standing investigation.
According to police sources, then-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Director Brig. Gen. Romeo Macapaz received a tip on June 23 about the siblings seeking refuge in a Southeast Asian country. Although the exact location remains undisclosed, the CIDG successfully brought the siblings, Jose and Elakim Patidongan, back to the Philippines on July 22.
Key Suspects in Sabungeros Disappearance
PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo revealed that Jose Patidongan is believed to be one of the two men caught on video forcibly taking victim Michael Bautista in handcuffs in Santa Cruz, Laguna, on April 28, 2021. This footage is crucial to the investigation as it directly links him to the abduction case.
Meanwhile, Elakim Patidongan is allegedly connected to the illegal withdrawal of funds from the bank account of Melbert Santos, another victim last seen alive in Santa Cruz on January 13, 2022. These actions have strengthened the police’s assertion that the siblings hold vital information that could unravel the mystery behind the disappearance of several sabungeros.
Investigative Progress and Next Steps
The PNP continues to pursue leads to solve the sabungeros abduction, with these recent arrests marking a pivotal point. Authorities are optimistic that the siblings’ testimonies will shed light on the involvement of other suspects, possibly including active police officers.
Whistleblower Totoy Patidongan has previously filed complaints against several law enforcement officials allegedly linked to the disappearances. These developments hint at a wider conspiracy that the police are now determined to expose fully.
