Tragic Fire Claims Two Young Lives in Bacolod City
BACOLOD CITY – Two siblings lost their lives, and their grandfather was injured after a fire broke out in their home in Purok Lison, Barangay 1, Bacolod City, early Tuesday morning, May 20. The fire, sparked by a lighted candle, claimed the lives of an eight-year-old boy and his six-year-old sister.
Reports indicate the fire originated from a candle placed on a table near the children’s bed. The keyphrase “fire sparked by lighted candle” describes the main cause of this tragic incident.
Power Outage Led to Use of Candle
Local experts noted that a power interruption had occurred in the area since 9 p.m. on Monday, May 19. Because of the blackout, the family resorted to using candles for lighting. At midnight, the children’s mother left the house to buy food, leaving the two siblings alone while they slept.
Fire Incident Details and Rescue Efforts
The fire was reported at 2:19 a.m. Firefighters arrived quickly, but the house, made of light materials, was already engulfed in flames. The children’s grandfather, 63-year-old Eduardo, who lived nearby, rushed to their aid and tried to rescue them. Unfortunately, the fire had grown too large, and the two children were trapped.
Eduardo suffered second-degree burns as he attempted to save his grandchildren. The bodies of the two children were found near a wooden wall partition next to their bed.
Aftermath and Property Damage
Fire officials declared the blaze extinguished at 2:33 a.m. The total damage to property was estimated at about 3,000 pesos. Fortunately, no other structures were affected by the fire.
Community leaders expressed their condolences and called for increased fire safety awareness, especially in homes relying on candles during power outages.
