Two Tectonic Earthquakes Hit Romblon Province
On Sunday, August 17, two tectonic earthquakes shook Romblon province, causing brief tremors felt across nearby areas. Officials reported that these seismic events were mild but noteworthy for the region.
First Quake Strikes Near Concepcion Town
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded a 3.9-magnitude earthquake at 9:27 a.m., located nine kilometers northwest of Concepcion town in Romblon. The quake originated at a depth of 10 kilometers below the surface.
Community members in Oriental Mindoro’s Pinamalayan town experienced the tremor at Intensity II, a light shaking that caused no damage. Local leaders noted the event was quickly over and did not disrupt daily activities.
Earlier Tremor Felt Near Santa Maria
Earlier that morning at 6:34 a.m., a smaller 2.2-magnitude tectonic earthquake occurred four kilometers southwest of Santa Maria town in Romblon. This tremor came from a shallow depth of three kilometers.
Sources emphasized that both quakes were classified as tectonic, caused by sudden movements along fault lines and plate boundaries beneath the Earth’s surface.
No Damage or Aftershocks Expected
Phivolcs officials assured the public that no damage or aftershocks are expected from either tremor. They continue to monitor seismic activity closely to ensure safety and preparedness in the region.
Residents are advised to stay alert but remain calm, as such tectonic earthquakes are common in the Philippines and often pass without incident.
