Two Warring Families Sign Peace Covenant in Sulu

Peace Covenant Ends Long-Standing Clan War

Two warring families from Panglima Estino, Sulu, signed a peace covenant on Wednesday afternoon, August 20, 2025, marking the end of their more than a year-long dispute. This conflict, which tragically claimed two lives, finally ceased following the concerted intervention of community leaders and local authorities.

Officials reported that the families involved in the peace pact are those of Pajid Yusop Ubaidulla and Rasmin Asara. The signing took place in the second congressional district of Sulu, with key local leaders and security officials witnessing this historic moment.

Background of the Clan War

The intense “two warring families” dispute began with a shooting incident on June 18, 2024, in Barangay Kan-Bulak, Luuk. This event resulted in the death of Nurikman Padjid, a member of one of the families, fueling the tension between the clans.

Further violence escalated on June 22 this year, when an ambush in Barangay Kan-Asaali, Panamao, led to the death of Asbi Mallah and left two relatives of the Asara family wounded. Community members said these incidents deepened the rido, or clan war, causing fear and instability in the area.

Significance of the Peace Covenant

Brig. Gen. Alaric Avelino Delos Santos, commander of the Army’s 1102nd Infantry Brigade, emphasized the courage it takes to forgive. He stated, “This act of reconciliation is not a sign of weakness but of true courage. It takes more strength to forgive than to seek revenge.”

He also remarked that the decision of the Ubaidulla and Asara families to sign the peace pact will be remembered by their children and grandchildren as a day that paved the way for a better future.

Community Cooperation Brings Resolution

The successful resolution of the dispute demonstrates that even the deepest conflicts can be settled through dialogue, local leadership, and community cooperation, local leaders noted. Their collaborative efforts have restored peace and order in the region, providing hope for lasting harmony.

Officials expressed optimism that this peace agreement would inspire other warring clans in the province to pursue similar paths toward reconciliation.
