Typhoon-Damaged Kennon Road Rockshed Raises Concerns
BAGUIO CITY — The recent typhoon “Emong” caused significant soil erosion that damaged the foundation of a newly built rockshed along Kennon Road. This typhoon-damaged Kennon Road rockshed has prompted Mayor Benjamin Magalong to call for an independent third-party audit to assess the structure’s safety and quality.
During an inspection, Mayor Magalong emphasized the importance of verifying the true condition of the rockshed. He highlighted that such a large-scale project should have been constructed with ample funding and meet “Class A” quality standards to withstand natural disasters.
Investigating Both Natural and Human Factors
The mayor further stressed that the audit must look beyond natural causes like soil erosion. It should also investigate possible human errors, including design flaws and construction lapses, which might have contributed to the damage. This comprehensive review aims to ensure the long-term safety of the road and the surrounding community.
Despite the damage, Mayor Magalong acknowledged the structure’s effectiveness in preventing rockfalls during the typhoon, which protected motorists and residents from greater hazards.
Immediate Response and Ongoing Recovery Efforts
Local authorities quickly responded to the incident. The Department of Public Works and Highways promptly deployed personnel and heavy equipment to manage the situation and start clearing operations. However, the affected section of Kennon Road will remain closed until experts complete a thorough structural integrity assessment.
The Baguio City Public Information Office confirmed that clearing work is still underway. Meanwhile, safety remains the top priority, and officials urge motorists to seek alternative routes.
