Typhoon Emong Triggers High Wind Warnings
Three regions are now under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 4 as Typhoon Emong, also known internationally as Co-may, continues its slow movement over the Pangasinan coast. This development, sources said, highlights the urgent threat posed by the typhoon’s powerful winds.
Emong was last reported hovering over the coastal waters of Burgos, Pangasinan, moving east-southeast at a slow pace, according to the latest weather update. The typhoon is packing sustained winds reaching 120 kilometers per hour, with gusts peaking at 150 kph.
Areas Under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 4
Due to Emong’s strength, the state weather agency raised TCWS No. 4 warnings over key locations, including southwestern Ilocos Sur (Santa Lucia, Santa Cruz, Tagudin), northwestern La Union (Bangar, Luna, Balaoan, Bacnotan, San Juan, City of San Fernando, Bauang), and the extreme northwestern part of Pangasinan (Agno, Bani, Bolinao, Anda, City of Alaminos).
This signal alerts residents to typhoon-force winds between 118 and 184 kph expected within the next 12 hours, posing a serious risk to life and property.
Storm Force Winds Across Multiple Provinces
Meanwhile, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 3 has been issued for the remaining areas of Ilocos Sur and La Union. It also covers northern and western Pangasinan (including Burgos, Dasol, Mabini, Lingayen, Bugallon, Infanta, Labrador, Sual, Dagupan City, San Fabian, Binmaley), the southern portion of Abra, western Mountain Province, and western Benguet.
TCWS No. 3 warns of storm-force winds ranging from 89 to 117 kph expected over the next 18 hours, carrying a moderate to significant threat to communities.
Regions Under Gale-Force Winds
Signal No. 2 is currently in effect for Ilocos Norte, the rest of Pangasinan and Abra, Apayao, Kalinga, the remainder of Mountain Province and Benguet, Babuyan Islands, northern and western mainland Cagayan, western Nueva Vizcaya, and northern Zambales.
Residents here should prepare for gale-force winds of 62 to 88 kph within 24 hours, which could cause minor to moderate damage.
Additional Areas Under Lower Signal Warnings
Lastly, TCWS No. 1 was raised over Batanes, the rest of Cagayan, western and central Isabela, Quirino, the remaining parts of Nueva Vizcaya and Zambales, Tarlac, northern Pampanga, and western and central Nueva Ecija.
This level indicates strong winds between 39 and 61 kph, representing a minimal to minor threat to life and property.
Typhoon’s Path and Intensification Forecast
Sources explained that Emong is expected to accelerate northeastward later tonight, possibly making landfall or passing close to northwestern Pangasinan before moving over La Union or Ilocos Sur late tonight or early Saturday morning.
“Emong may still briefly intensify prior to landfall due to its compact circulation and favorable atmospheric and oceanic environment,” local officials noted.
Residents in affected areas are advised to stay alert and follow updates closely to safeguard lives and properties during this severe weather event.
