Typhoon Emong Weakens into Severe Tropical Storm
Typhoon Emong, internationally known as Co-May, has weakened into a severe tropical storm after making landfall in Candon City, Ilocos Sur. The state weather bureau confirmed this development early Friday morning.
Nine areas in Luzon remain under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 3, while 11 areas are under Signal No. 2, and eight areas under Signal No. 1. Authorities continue to monitor the storm’s movement closely.
Storm Path and Current Status
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) in its 8 a.m. bulletin, Emong struck near Candon City at 5:10 a.m. It was last tracked near San Isidro, Abra, with maximum sustained winds of 100 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts reaching 165 kph. The storm is moving west-northwest at 25 kph.
Pagasa forecasted that Emong will cross the mountainous areas of Northern Luzon and enter the Babuyan Channel before noon. The storm is expected to move northeastward, passing close to or over the Babuyan Islands between midday and afternoon.
Projected Movement and Impact Areas
Emong may approach Batanes in the afternoon and evening before heading north-northeast and eventually exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday.
