Typhoon Gorio Brings Heavy Rainfall to Batanes, Cagayan

Heavy Rainfall Expected in Batanes and Cagayan

Moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast in Batanes and Cagayan this Wednesday due to Typhoon Gorio, officials reported. The four-word keyphrase heavy rainfall expected in Batanes appears early as the typhoon approaches, signaling the need for vigilance among residents and local authorities.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), heavy rainfall expected in Batanes and Cagayan will range between 50 to 100 millimeters throughout the day. Community members said this level of rainfall may cause significant disruptions, especially in vulnerable locations.

Flood and Landslide Risks Rise Amid Intense Showers

Local leaders noted that during periods of moderate to heavy rainfall, localized flooding is likely, particularly in urbanized zones, low-lying areas, and places near rivers. Moreover, landslides remain a threat in highly susceptible mountainous regions.

Pagasa emphasized that rainfall could be heavier in elevated terrains, where the accumulated moisture from previous rains may worsen the situation. “Forecast rainfall may be higher in mountainous and elevated areas. Moreover, impacts in some areas may be worsened by significant antecedent rainfall,” officials reported.

Authorities Urge Precautionary Measures to Protect Lives

Disaster risk reduction offices and the public are advised to take all necessary precautions to safeguard lives and property. Community members said preparedness is crucial as heavy rainfall expected in Batanes and Cagayan could lead to emergencies.

“The public and disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned are advised to take all necessary measures to protect life and property,” local leaders stressed.

Typhoon Gorio Intensifies, Moving West-Northwest

Pagasa’s 5 a.m. bulletin confirmed that Typhoon Gorio has slightly intensified. It now carries maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour near its center, with gusts reaching up to 170 kph. The typhoon was last located approximately 165 kilometers northeast of Itbayat, Batanes, moving west-northwest at 25 kph, according to officials.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 2 has been raised over Itbayat, while TCWS No. 1 covers the rest of Batanes, alerting residents to prepare for strong winds and heavy rains.

Community Preparedness Remains Key

Local leaders underscored the importance of readiness in the face of heavy rainfall expected in Batanes and Cagayan. They encouraged residents to monitor weather updates and follow advisories from authorities to minimize risks posed by the typhoon.
