Typhoon Gorio Triggers Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 was raised over Itbayat, Batanes, as Typhoon Gorio intensified slightly, local officials reported. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) confirmed the development early Wednesday morning.
According to sources, Typhoon Gorio, internationally known as Podul, was last located approximately 165 kilometers northeast of Itbayat. It is moving west-northwest at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour. The typhoon now carries maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour near its center, an increase from 130 kph earlier. Wind gusts have also strengthened, reaching up to 170 kph.
Wind Signals and Expected Impacts
Pagasa also raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 for the remaining areas of Batanes. Community members noted that the areas under Wind Signal No. 2 may experience minor to moderate impacts due to gale-force winds. Meanwhile, regions under Wind Signal No. 1 could face minimal to minor effects from strong winds.
Gorio Enhances Southwest Monsoon Winds
Officials reported that Typhoon Gorio is intensifying the southwest monsoon, locally called habagat. This will result in strong to gale-force gusts, especially in coastal and upland regions exposed to the winds. The affected areas include:
- Babuyan Islands
- Northern part of mainland Cagayan
- Eastern section of Isabela
- Northern portion of Ilocos Norte
Projected Path of Typhoon Gorio
Typhoon Gorio is forecast to continue moving west-northwest throughout the forecast period. It is expected to make landfall along the eastern coast of southern Taiwan by Wednesday. Officials emphasized that Gorio will likely maintain its typhoon strength before landfall and weaken afterward.
Sources added that the typhoon is projected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Wednesday afternoon or evening, reducing the immediate threat to the country.
