Typhoon Gorio Sparks Mudflows in Batanes
The Batanes Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) reported a significant mudflow in Imnajbu village, Uyugan town, on Wednesday morning, August 13, 2025. This event, caused by Typhoon Gorio’s (international name: Podul) heavy rains, has raised serious concerns about road safety and prompted urgent warnings for motorists and residents.
Officials urged motorists and commuters to avoid the affected area or exercise extreme caution if travel is unavoidable. The advisory specifically highlighted the Uyugan-Mahatao Interior Road at KM K0025+800 as a high-risk zone. Residents were also encouraged to stay informed and promptly report any new hazards to local authorities.
Widespread Road Hazards Due to Severe Weather
Local leaders noted that strong winds combined with intermittent rainfall have led to additional road hazards across Mahatao and Ivana towns. Minor rockfalls were reported in several locations, including Ahaw/Blue Lagoon, Shelter Port, and Paderes Viewpoint, further complicating travel conditions.
The PDRRMO emphasized that all roads, particularly those near cliffs and sharp curves, are vulnerable to the ongoing severe weather. This increases the risk for travelers, demanding heightened vigilance and careful navigation.
Travel Restrictions and Safety Measures Enforced
Due to the significant dangers posed by strong winds, especially in exposed areas, officials advised against travel using tricycles and cogon trikes. Non-essential travel is discouraged, and motorists are urged to drive with extreme caution to avoid accidents.
In Itbayat town, municipal authorities suspended work and classes at all levels in both public and private institutions on Wednesday as a precautionary measure against the typhoon’s impact. This decision prioritizes the safety of students and workers amid deteriorating weather conditions.
Sea Travel Suspended for Safety
The Coast Guard Station Batanes reported that sea travel to and from the province has been suspended since Tuesday. Mariners have been advised to remain in port or seek safe harbor immediately to ensure their safety amid rough seas and strong winds.
The agency reminded the public to stay vigilant and prioritize safety during this period of heightened risk caused by Typhoon Gorio.
