Ukraine expects full ceasefire before talks with Putin
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Sunday that he is ready to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin for discussions in Istanbul this coming Thursday. This decision came shortly after former US President Donald Trump urged Zelenskiy to accept an immediate offer for talks with Russia.
In a message posted on X, Zelenskiy emphasized that Ukraine expects a full ceasefire to begin on Monday. According to him, this ceasefire is essential to create the right conditions for meaningful diplomacy aimed at ending the conflict.
“And I will be waiting for Putin in Türkiye on Thursday,” Zelenskiy said, signaling his commitment to the planned meeting and the hope for progress in peace efforts.
Ceasefire as a foundation for peace talks
The full ceasefire expected on Monday is seen by Ukraine as a necessary step to establish trust and open the door for effective negotiations. Without this pause in hostilities, diplomatic talks would lack the stability needed for constructive dialogue.
Zelenskiy’s readiness to meet Putin reflects Ukraine’s willingness to explore peaceful solutions, despite ongoing tensions. Meanwhile, external voices like Donald Trump continue to influence the timing and dynamics of these potential negotiations.
As the situation develops, many eyes will be on Istanbul this Thursday to see if both leaders can move toward a resolution that might finally bring an end to the conflict.
