Public Alert as Upper Wawa Dam Testing Begins
The provincial government of Rizal has urged residents to remain cautious as the Upper Wawa Dam undergoes critical testing and commissioning activities. Starting August 5, 2025, these procedures will continue for 10 days, aiming to assess the dam’s readiness.
Authorities emphasized the need for vigilance, especially for those living nearby, due to an expected increase and strengthening of water flow. “Everyone—especially those living near the area—is advised to exercise caution, remain alert, and continue monitoring updates,” local officials said in Filipino.
Testing Activities and Project Background
WawaJVCo, the joint venture managing the project, has been conducting comprehensive tests on the dam’s gates, environmental flow turbines, and multiple sensors to ensure optimal performance. The company represents a partnership between Prime Infrastructure Capital Inc. and San Lorenzo Ruiz Builders and Developers Group, according to sources.
The Upper Wawa Dam is located across Barangay Calawis in Antipolo City, Barangay Pintong Bukawe in San Mateo, and Barangay San Rafael in Rodriguez. It lies within the protected Upper Marikina River Basin Landscape, spanning six river systems including Wawa, Montalban, and Boso-Boso Rivers.
Significance and Impact of the Upper Wawa Dam
As the largest water supply dam built in the Philippines in over five decades, the Upper Wawa Dam marks a major milestone. It forms the second phase of the Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project, designed to meet growing water demand in Metro Manila and Rizal.
Once operational, scheduled by December, the dam will supply up to 710 million liters of water daily. This will benefit more than 700,000 households or approximately 3.5 million people within the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System’s service area, local leaders noted.
Residents and stakeholders are urged to stay updated on developments during the testing period and to follow safety advisories closely.
