Valencia City Holds Surprise Simultaneous Earthquake Drill
VALENCIA CITY, Bukidnon – In response to the recent powerful earthquake in northern Cebu, Valencia City swiftly organized a surprise simultaneous earthquake drill across its barangays on Thursday. The city’s proactive approach aims to strengthen community preparedness and minimize risks during seismic events.
City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) chief June Ray Valero explained that the drill was part of Valencia City’s ongoing efforts to enhance disaster readiness. “This simultaneous earthquake drill allows us to test our emergency response capabilities and ensure that every barangay is prepared,” Valero said.
Addressing Recent Earthquake Impact
The recent earthquake in northern Cebu, which claimed numerous lives, underscored the urgent need for heightened disaster preparedness. Officials reported that the death toll has since dropped to 69, reflecting ongoing rescue and relief operations. This tragedy served as a catalyst for Valencia City’s decision to conduct the surprise drill, emphasizing the importance of readiness even in areas not directly affected.
Local leaders noted that the drill involved coordination among barangay officials, emergency responders, and community members. The exercise simulated real-time scenarios, including evacuation procedures, emergency communication, and first aid response.
Community Engagement and Safety Measures
Community members actively participated in the drill, demonstrating their commitment to safety. Barangay captains coordinated with residents to ensure everyone understood evacuation routes and safety protocols. “Ang importante, kahibalo ta unsaon paglikay ug pag-andam sa panahon sa kalamidad,” a barangay official remarked.
Officials highlighted that these drills not only raise awareness but also help identify gaps in the city’s disaster response plan. The data gathered will guide improvements in infrastructure, training, and resource allocation.
Future Plans for Disaster Preparedness
Valero emphasized that the city plans to conduct regular earthquake drills and expand disaster risk reduction programs. “We aim to foster a culture of preparedness across all barangays,” she stated. Furthermore, partnerships with regional agencies and experts will be strengthened to enhance response strategies.
The city government encourages residents to stay informed and participate actively in future drills. “Preparedness saves lives,” community leaders reminded.
