Vice President Prioritizes Country Over Personal Reconciliation Talks

Vice President Emphasizes National Issues Over Personal Matters

Vice President Sara Duterte recently declined to comment on President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s desire to reconcile with her family, highlighting that the country’s challenges outweigh personal concerns. During a media interaction outside the International Criminal Court (ICC) detention facility in The Hague on May 30, she stressed, “Unang-una, hindi muna siguro ako magsalita about reconciliation dahil hindi naman mahalaga siguro ang mga personal na problema ng mga tao. Ang mas mahalaga is iyong taumbayan at iyong bayan natin.” This translates to her belief that personal issues hold less significance compared to the welfare of the nation and its people.

The keyphrase “desire to reconcile with” was addressed early in the conversation, reflecting the focus on efforts to mend ties amidst political tensions.

Background on the Duterte-Marcos Relationship

Vice President Duterte was visiting former President Rodrigo Duterte at the ICC facility, where he has been detained since March 12 on charges related to crimes against humanity. Her visit was accompanied by her mother, Elizabeth Zimmerman. The elder Duterte’s arrest, which occurred at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on March 11, marked a significant strain in the once close alliance between the Duterte and Marcos families.

President Marcos, in an earlier video message, expressed openness to reconciliation, stating his aversion to conflict. However, when allies suggested efforts to bring the detained former president back to the Philippines, officials from Malacañang and the President emphasized that any reconciliation should not be conditional.

Vice President’s Response to Spokesperson Speculation

When asked about the possibility of former Commission on Elections commissioner Rowena Guanzon becoming her spokesperson, the Vice President responded positively but cautiously. “Hindi namin napag-usapan sa Office of the Vice President ang spokesperson, pero saludo kami sa talino at tapang ni Atty. Rowena Guanzon,” she said, acknowledging Guanzon’s intelligence and courage.

She continued, “So, kung gusto niya magsalita, go lang ng go. Makikinig tayong lahat sa kanya,” encouraging Guanzon to speak freely and assuring that her voice would be heard.

Guanzon, known for her past involvement with political rallies supporting former Vice President Leni Robredo and her candidacy in the 2022 elections, has recently hinted at a desire to represent the Vice President publicly.

Looking Ahead Amid Political Tensions

The complex dynamics between the Duterte and Marcos families continue to influence Filipino politics. While personal reconciliation remains uncertain, officials reiterate the importance of focusing on national interests and unity. The Vice President’s emphasis on putting the country’s welfare above personal disputes reflects a commitment to addressing broader issues that affect the Filipino people.
