Vice President Sara Duterte Points to Marcos Over Alyansa Poll Results
Vice President Sara Duterte directly attributed the poor performance of Alyansa Para Sa Bagong Pilipinas senatorial candidates in the recent midterm elections to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. She stated firmly that no one else should be held responsible for the coalition’s disappointing results.
“It’s because of the President. The people find him wanting of his promises, and the people expect more from the President, particularly with regard to his work for our country,” Duterte said during a media briefing on May 17. She emphasized, “So, they should not blame anyone else, anything that has happened. It’s just the President.”
Alyansa Para Sa Bagong Pilipinas Faces Election Challenges
The Alyansa coalition, made up of five political parties, fielded 12 senatorial candidates, but only half managed to secure a spot in the so-called Magic 12. Notably, Las Piñas Representative Camille Villar sought Vice President Duterte’s endorsement, yet none of the winning candidates came from President Marcos’s Partido Federal ng Pilipinas.
Several candidates ran under different party banners: ACT-CIS Partylist Representative Erwin Tulfo was nominated by Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats; former senators Tito Sotto and Lito Lapid ran under the Nationalist People’s Coalition; while reelectionist Senator Pia Cayetano and Villar represented the Nacionalista Party. Former senator Panfilo Lacson ran as an independent.
Presidential Family’s Participation and Election Results
Imee Marcos, President Marcos’s sister, originally part of the Alyansa coalition, later sought endorsement from former President Rodrigo Duterte’s Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) just days before the election.
Among the “DuterTen” candidates, only three—Senators Bong Go, Ronald Dela Rosa, and Representative Rodante Marcoleta—made it to the winning circle. Former senators Kiko Pangilinan and Bam Aquino, who ran with liberal yet independent stances, also secured spots in the Senate’s Top 12.
Local Election Success and Family Updates
Vice President Duterte revealed that her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, has been updated on the midterm election outcomes. While he did not comment on the national results, he expressed satisfaction with the local election outcomes in Davao City.
“When I updated him…for President Duterte, I didn’t have any reaction with the national results. But on the local results, he said ‘tagam sila,’” she shared.
The Vice President and her brother, Davao City Representative Paolo Duterte, attended a thanksgiving mass at the Carmelite Church in Lanang, Davao City, on Saturday. The Dutertes dominated local races, with former President Rodrigo Duterte winning the mayoralty and incumbent Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte securing the vice mayoralty. Additionally, Paolo Duterte’s son, Omar, also won a congressional seat in the midterm elections.
