Vice President Sara Duterte Challenges Marcos’s Focus Claims
MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte firmly rejected President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s assertion that he is prioritizing the people’s needs over her impeachment case, stating that ordinary Filipinos do not share this view.
Duterte’s response came after Marcos reiterated he had no involvement in her impeachment and emphasized that his attention remains on pressing national issues. However, the vice president, speaking during a chance interview in Melbourne, Australia, expressed skepticism about this claim.
“Well, good for him and we hope to see some sort of truth to his statement that he is focusing on helping our fellow Filipinos and doing something for the country,” she said. “Unfortunately, if you talk to the ordinary citizens and the Filipino community abroad, we don’t see anything at all.”
Conflicting Statements Mark Marcos’s Presidency
Duterte further criticized President Marcos for delivering “conflicting statements” since the start of his administration. She described these inconsistencies as a “hallmark of a scammer,” highlighting his failure to fulfill campaign promises.
“In fact, he has not followed through with any of his campaign promises, and that is an example of the conflicts with regard to our President,” Duterte added. “Well, we’re not surprised. He has the hallmark of a scammer.”
Impeachment Trial Looms for Duterte
The vice president is preparing to face a Senate impeachment trial following her indictment by the House of Representatives on February 5. She confronts serious allegations, including betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the constitution, graft and corruption, and other high crimes.
This impeachment marks a significant political challenge for Duterte amid the ongoing national discourse surrounding governance and accountability. As the trial progresses, public attention remains fixed on how these events will unfold.
