Vice President Sara Duterte Supports Interim Release Request

VP Sara Duterte Backs Interim Release Request

DAVAO CITY – Vice President Sara Duterte has expressed her support for the interim release request filed by former President Rodrigo Duterte’s legal team before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. The request cites health concerns related to the former leader’s advanced age. The four-word keyphrase “interim release request filed” appears early as she discussed the matter during a press briefing following the Pasidungog 2025 event hosted by the Office of the Vice President.

“For me, that would be for his benefit. He’s already 80-years-old and does not meet all the needs of someone that the ICC detention unit provides. He’s not just a senior citizen – he’s probably what you’d call a super senior at this point,” Vice President Duterte said. She believes granting the interim release would serve her father’s best interests given his age and health.

Health and Care Concerns for Former President

The Vice President emphasized that the former President’s wellbeing should take priority. She pointed out that he is the oldest detainee at the ICC, making access to proper care crucial. “It would likely be better if the former Chief Executive were granted interim release and had access to nurses and caregivers who could assist him,” she added.

When asked about potential host countries for the interim release, Vice President Duterte deferred to the legal team, specifically Atty. Nicholas Kaufman. She explained that the family does not decide on the host country and that no assistance has been provided by the ICC itself. Instead, all arrangements come solely from the former President’s legal representatives.

Details of the Interim Release Request

The interim release petition has been officially submitted and is publicly available on the ICC’s website. While some portions remain confidential, the main reasons and explanations presented by the defense are accessible to the public, prosecutors, judges, and victim representatives.

The former President faces charges related to alleged crimes against humanity connected to the controversial war on drugs during his administration. His legal team is currently awaiting the ICC’s decision on the interim release plea.

Vice President Duterte declined to comment further on procedural or legal matters, directing additional inquiries to Atty. Kaufman.
