Vice President Sara Duterte Highlights Teachers’ Vital Role
MANILA – Vice President Sara Duterte called on teachers to actively shape critical thinking among the youth as a crucial defense against fake news and manipulative content. She emphasized the essential role of teachers in nurturing young minds, especially in today’s digital age where misinformation spreads rapidly.
In her message for National Teachers’ Month, Duterte stressed that teachers do more than educate; they help build the foundation of a nation’s future. “They also fortify the values that hold a nation together, and in a democracy, instill the importance of freedom and the protection of our rights,” she expressed, underscoring the deep impact educators have on society.
Challenges Faced by Teachers Acknowledged
Having served as education secretary for over two years, Duterte recognized the persistent challenges teachers encounter. Officials reported that many classrooms remain overcrowded and under-resourced, issues that continue to strain the education system. Despite these hurdles, teachers remain dedicated to nation-building through their work.
“And you serve with unwavering dedication,” Duterte said, acknowledging the commitment of educators even amid criticism and lingering problems from previous administrations. Community members noted that this dedication is vital to the youth’s development and the country’s progress.
Teachers as Guardians of Truth and Critical Thinking
Duterte described teachers as essential guides in the youth’s journey toward achieving their goals. She urged educators to help learners develop critical thinking skills to navigate the flood of misinformation online. “The foundation of knowledge of the youth comes from our teachers and you are all part of shaping their minds for critical thinking,” she emphasized.
“This is especially important in the age of fake news, misinformation, disinformation and other media and social media content that is aimed at manipulating what is right and the truth,” she added, highlighting the growing need for media literacy.
Hope and Responsibility for the Future
Expressing optimism, Duterte said she hopes teachers will lead the youth toward truth and righteousness. She also reminded everyone that the responsibility to inspire hope, love, and faith in young Filipinos extends beyond the classroom.
“This is also to push them to success in achieving their dreams of becoming a doctor, teacher, lawyer, police officer and other professions. Let us unite to ensure that our learners will grow with wit, care for others and love,” she concluded, calling for collective support to nurture future generations.
