Vice President’s Impeachment Trial Sparks Heated Reactions

Vice President’s Impeachment Trial Stirs Political Tensions

MANILA, Philippines — The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte has drawn sharp attention, with House spokesperson Princess Abante commenting on the surprising shift in Duterte’s stance. Initially eager for a “bloodbath” during the proceedings, Duterte’s recent response appeared more restrained, prompting Abante to joke about the change.

“Baka wisik wisik lang daw muna (Maybe she prefers sprinkle for now),” Abante quipped during a press briefing on Wednesday. She stressed, however, that the trial must continue to allow the presentation of evidence and provide answers to critical questions.

Legal Maneuvers and Trial Developments

Prosecution spokesperson Antonio Bucoy noted that Vice President Duterte’s latest reply to the articles of impeachment was calmer than expected. Instead of pushing for a fierce confrontation, Duterte’s camp sought to have the complaint dismissed, arguing it should be declared void.

Duterte’s legal team filed an Answer Ad Cautelam, claiming the fourth impeachment complaint violated the constitutional rule limiting impeachment to one proceeding per official per year. The document asserts the complaint is “void ab initio,” or invalid from the start.

When questioned, Duterte reaffirmed her desire for a “bloodbath” but explained that her lawyers advised a more cautious approach. She said, “As a client, I will not impose what I want over what my lawyers advise because that would mean that I am wasting my money paying my lawyers but not listening to their expert advice. I want a bloodbath, but the experts want something else.”

Constitutional Arguments and Future Proceedings

The impeachment complaint’s dismissal hinges on Section 3 (5) Article XI of the 1987 Constitution, which prohibits more than one impeachment proceeding against an official within a year. Duterte’s camp filed a 35-page document stressing this point, seeking to invalidate the complaint outright.

Despite the legal wrangling, House officials remain committed to moving the trial forward. They emphasize the importance of hearing all evidence and allowing the process to unfold transparently.

The impeachment trial continues to captivate the nation, highlighting the complex interplay between legal strategy and political drama. For more news and updates on the impeachment trial, visit Filipinokami.com.
