Village Chief Dies in Tragic Van Accident in Cagayan
A 54-year-old village chief lost his life while nine others were injured after their government-owned van fell off a ravine in Cagayan. The accident occurred early Friday, July 18, as the vehicle navigated a curved road in Barangay Pared, Alcala town.
Jesus Calatican, Barangay Lablabig’s chief in Claveria town, was declared dead on arrival at the hospital, sources said. The incident left several villagers wounded, including China Rubio, 54; Andres Rubio, 52; Rosalie Udac, 65; Princess Udac; Edimar Pascua, 49; Benelyn Martinez, 44; Pedro Cabangin, 65; and two minors, all from nearby barangays.
Accident Details and Response
The van was en route to Isabela province when it plunged off the ravine along the winding road. Alcala disaster risk reduction officials suspect that Calatican, who was driving, may have misjudged the sharp curve, leading to the crash.
Calatican’s body was trapped inside the van during the accident. Meanwhile, the injured passengers are recovering at the Cagayan Valley Medical Center in Tuguegarao City, local leaders noted.
Safety Concerns on Curved Roads
This tragic event highlights the dangers of traveling along steep and curved routes in the region. Authorities remind drivers to exercise caution, especially when driving government vehicles for public service.
