VP Sara Duterte Congratulates New Pope Leo XIV

Vice President Sara Duterte warmly congratulated Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost on his election as the new leader of the Catholic Church. Known now as Pope Leo XIV, he leads a global flock of 1.4 billion Catholics. Duterte expressed hope that his pontificate will inspire reconciliation and understanding worldwide.

She emphasized that the election invites Filipinos to renew their faith through prayer, service, and living Gospel values. “This joyful moment unites over 80 million Filipinos, whether here in the Philippines or abroad,” she said. “We are deeply grateful to God for guiding the College of Cardinals in their prayerful discernment.”

Hope for Peace and Interfaith Dialogue

According to Duterte, Pope Leo XIV’s leadership is an opportunity for the Church to strengthen dialogue among different faiths and cultures. She added that his pontificate should promote solidarity among nations and work tirelessly toward peace. “May his guidance open new paths for reconciliation, understanding, and cooperation in our troubled world,” she said.

She also expressed the wish that the Philippines will remain a steadfast supporter and active participant in the mission of the universal Church under Pope Leo XIV.

New Pope’s Historic Background

Pope Leo XIV is the 267th pope and the first ever from the United States. At 69 years old and an Augustinian priest, he is also the second pontiff from the Americas after Pope Francis. Filipinos across the globe are now inspired to deepen their commitment to faith during this significant time.
