Wawa Dam Water Level Nears Critical Overflow
The Wawa Dam in Rizal is rapidly approaching its critical overflow level, local officials said Monday afternoon. Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto reported that the water level at the dam reached 134.06 meters above sea level, edging close to the critical 135-meter mark.
“This situation demands attention because if the dam spills, it will raise water levels in the Marikina River,” Sotto warned, adding that local government units are closely coordinating with barangays Santolan, Sta. Lucia, and floodway areas to prepare for possible impacts.
Marikina River Alarm System Activated
Authorities raised the first alarm after the Marikina River hit 15.9 meters at 1:30 p.m., signaling residents to get ready for potential evacuation. A second alarm will sound once the river reaches 16 meters, while an 18-meter level triggers mandatory evacuation orders.
“Don’t panic, but please follow barangay or DRRMO advice if evacuation is needed,” Sotto urged the community on social media.
Heavy Rains Expected Across Metro Manila and Nearby Provinces
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration’s 11 a.m. rainfall outlook, Metro Manila and nearby provinces like Zambales, Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Batangas, and Rizal will experience heavy to intense rains from Monday through Tuesday noon. These conditions are driven by the southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat.”
In response, Malacañang announced the suspension of work and classes from 1 p.m. Monday onwards in Metro Manila and the surrounding provinces, including Cavite, Rizal, Batangas, Laguna, Bulacan, Pampanga, Zambales, and Bataan.
Local leaders continue monitoring the situation closely, urging residents to stay alert and prepared as the heavy rains persist.
