Weight Stigma Blocks Filipinos From Obesity Care

Weight Stigma Blocks Filipinos From Obesity Care

Stigma and misinformation are major barriers keeping many Filipinos with obesity from accessing proper care, health experts warn. The weight stigma deeply affects individuals, discouraging them from seeking the treatment they need and deserve.

Dr. Ma. Corazon Del Mundo, a psychiatrist and member of a local psychiatric association, highlighted the emotional damage caused by societal bias. “Unfortunately, weight stigma and misinformation are deeply ingrained in our society. Individuals affected by obesity often face shame and judgment, not only externally but also within healthcare environments. This stigma can prevent them from seeking the treatment they deserve,” she explained during a recent health campaign launch.

Obesity Is a Complex Medical Issue

Contrary to common belief, obesity is not simply a matter of personal discipline or lifestyle choices. Experts stress that it is a chronic disease influenced by genetics, hormones, environment, and mental health factors. Misunderstanding this complexity fuels stigma, discrimination, and delays in care.

Campaign organizers noted that changing public perception is crucial. Dr. Cyrus Pasamba, a senior medical manager, said, “Our goal is to shift the conversation from blame to understanding and from stigma to support.” He added, “Obesity transcends mere aesthetics; it is a legitimate disease that warrants serious attention, robust resources, and, above all, compassion.”

Truth About Weight Campaign Aims to Educate

The Truth About Weight campaign offers science-based information, educational tools, free health risk assessments, and personal stories of those living with obesity. Health professionals urge the public to stop judging people based on size and to promote proper diagnosis and care.

Wei Sun, a general manager connected to the campaign, stressed, “The silence surrounding obesity must end. It is a disease that we must treat with urgency and seriousness.”

Ending stigma and misinformation about obesity can unlock better healthcare access and improve lives for many Filipinos.
