Western Visayas Inflation Rate Drops for Second Month
Western Visayas inflation rate fell for the second month in a row, local sources said. The Philippine Statistics Authority reported that inflation eased from 1.8 percent in April to 1.5 percent in May. This steady decline highlights a slowing rise in consumer prices across the region.
The downward trend was largely driven by a slower increase in food and non-alcoholic beverage prices. These items recorded a growth of just 0.3 percent in May, down from 0.7 percent in April, a PSA official noted. Additionally, transportation costs further declined, dropping 3 percent compared to a 2.3 percent decrease the previous month.
Inflation Rates Across Provinces
Iloilo City, the regional capital, experienced the highest inflation rate at 3.3 percent in May. Iloilo province followed with 2.8 percent. Meanwhile, Antique province recorded the lowest inflation with a negative 1.3 percent, reflecting deflation in that area. Capiz saw inflation at 0.9 percent, Guimaras at 0.8 percent, and Aklan at 0.7 percent.
For the first time, Negros Occidental and its highly urbanized city of Bacolod were excluded from the Western Visayas inflation report. These areas now belong to the newly formed Negros Island Region, which adjusts the regional inflation statistics going forward.
This consistent dip in inflation provides some relief to consumers in Western Visayas, as food and transportation costs become less burdensome. Local leaders hope this trend continues, supporting the region’s economic stability.
