Western Visayas LGUs Urged to Adopt Speed Limit Ordinance
ILOILO CITY – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has called on other local government units (LGUs) in the Western Visayas region to follow Sigma town’s lead by adopting its speed limit ordinance. This move aims to make roads safer for everyone in the area.
Starting June 1, Sigma began enforcing its speed limit ordinance using speed enforcement cameras strategically placed throughout the town. “By integrating technology with law enforcement, Sigma is setting a benchmark for other LGUs in enhancing public safety on our roads,” local officials noted, emphasizing the town’s progressive approach.
First to Use Speed Enforcement Cameras
Sigma stands as the first LGU in Western Visayas to deploy speed enforcement cameras, marking a significant step toward reducing road accidents. Mayor Dante Rizal Eslabon explained that the ordinance, passed last year, targets the high volume of vehicles passing through the town daily.
Since Sigma is a key route connecting Iloilo and Roxas City, Capiz’s provincial capital, it sees a large flow of traffic. Additionally, this road serves travelers heading to and from Boracay Island and Aklan province, making safety measures critical.
Collaborative Enforcement Efforts
To effectively implement the speed limit ordinance, the Sigma LGU partnered with the LTO Dumalag District Office and the Sigma Municipal Police Station (MPS). The speed enforcement cameras’ control center is managed by the Public Order and Safety Unit (POSU) in close coordination with these groups.
This collaboration ensures that speeding violations are monitored and addressed promptly, further promoting safer driving behavior in the region.
The LTO’s encouragement for other LGUs to adopt Sigma’s speed limit ordinance highlights a growing push for technology-driven traffic management across Western Visayas. Local leaders believe this initiative can significantly reduce accidents and enhance public safety on busy roads.
