Whistleblower Files Complaints on Missing Sabungeros Case
MANILA, Philippines — Julie Patidongan, the whistleblower known as Totoy, is set to file complaints before the National Police Commission (Napolcom) against police officers allegedly involved in the abduction of cockfighting enthusiasts, or “missing sabungeros.” This ongoing case has drawn intense public attention as it reveals troubling allegations against some law enforcers.
Last June, Napolcom Vice Chairperson Rafael Calinisan launched a motu proprio investigation after Patidongan disclosed in an earlier interview that police officers were paid to kidnap and kill the missing sabungeros. The Philippine Coast Guard divers, following leads from Patidongan, continue their search for the remains in Taal Lake, highlighting the urgency of the investigation.
Patidongan to File Formal Complaints
In a recent interview on DZBB, Patidongan confirmed, “On Monday, I will definitely go to Napolcom. I will be filing complaints against the police officers I mentioned.” His determined stance marks a crucial step in holding accountable those allegedly responsible for the disappearances.
Meanwhile, Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III confirmed that 15 police officers, including 11 still active, are now under restrictive custody at Camp Crame in Quezon City. This move signals the PNP’s commitment to transparency and justice.
Support from Associates and Ongoing Investigation
When asked if any of Patidongan’s associates are willing to cooperate, he replied, “There are already some. Former police officers who were involved are starting to reach out. Maybe, once they’re all gathered in Camp Crame, someone might speak up.” This growing cooperation could provide new leads to resolve the case.
Meanwhile, Napolcom Vice Chair Calinisan has been in contact with individuals who possess substantial information about the case. He previously urged Patidongan to submit an affidavit to strengthen the commission’s investigation.
Legal Charges and Continuing Efforts
Patidongan is among six Manila Arena security personnel facing kidnapping and serious illegal detention charges linked to the disappearance of five sabungeros and their driver in January 2022. The case remains a top priority as authorities push to uncover the truth and bring justice to the victims and their families.
