CHR Calls for Witness Safety in Missing Sabungeros Case
The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has urged authorities to prioritize the protection of a crucial witness in the missing sabungeros case. This witness revealed that 34 missing cockfighting enthusiasts were allegedly killed and buried in Taal Lake, Batangas. The CHR stresses that ensuring the safety of this witness is vital for the ongoing investigation.
The CHR pledged to continue probing the case and called for urgent, coordinated efforts among government agencies. “The emergence of a suspect in this crime, and his willingness to reveal what he knows, is a welcome development,” said CHR Commissioner and spokesperson Beda Epres. He added that collaboration between the CHR, Department of Justice, Philippine Navy, and Philippine Coast Guard is essential to finally resolve this case and deliver justice.
Urgent and Coordinated Action Needed
The CHR emphasized the importance of protecting the witness to encourage open and honest testimonies. They also hope that others with relevant information will come forward. Earlier, one of the six security guards accused of abducting the sabungeros, known as “Alias Totoy,” disclosed that the victims were strangled with tie wire and their bodies were dumped in Taal Lake.
CHR special investigators from Calabarzon have already visited the reported site. They are conducting monitoring activities and participating in joint quick response operations with other authorities. This marks a significant development that could lead to uncovering the truth behind the disappearance of the sabungeros.
Families Engage in Dialogue Amid Investigation
The CHR remains hopeful that this new testimony will spark a more thorough and cooperative investigation. They believe this may finally bring justice to the victims and closure to their families. Recently, the families of the missing sabungeros took part in a consultation dialogue with CHR officials, including Commissioner Epres.
As the investigation progresses, the CHR continues to call on all involved agencies to unite in their efforts. This coordinated approach is crucial to ensure that no stone is left unturned in seeking justice for the 34 missing cockfighting enthusiasts.
