Comelec Chair’s Bag Stolen in Pasay City
Authorities apprehended a woman on Wednesday for allegedly stealing the bag of Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairperson George Garcia, officials reported. The arrest took place in Pasay City, while five other suspects remain at large, according to Southern Police District (SPD) sources.
The 44-year-old suspect, identified only as “Hazel,” a resident of Las Piñas City, was traced and arrested after authorities reviewed closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage. The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon when Garcia was dining at a restaurant along Roxas Boulevard.
Details of the Theft Incident
Police explained that six suspects, posing as customers, stole the bag placed beside Garcia’s chair. The stolen items reportedly included cash, identification cards, and a cellphone. Despite efforts by the victim’s bodyguards to chase the suspects, they managed to escape.
Authorities recovered the identification cards and cellphone from Hazel, but the stolen cash remains missing. The police did not disclose the exact amount of money taken.
“The suspects fled on board a silver Toyota Innova,” SPD officials confirmed.
Ongoing Manhunt for Remaining Suspects
Further investigation identified three additional suspects through CCTV footage. They were named “Romson,” “Alberto,” and “Jun,” all reportedly residents of Bacoor, Cavite, and linked to the so-called “Salisi” gang.
The other two suspects have yet to be identified. Police continue to pursue the five remaining individuals involved in the theft.
Current Status of the Arrested Suspect
Hazel is currently in custody at the Pasay City Police Station while authorities prepare to file charges. However, officials have not yet specified which charges will be filed against her.
Community members expressed concern over the incident, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance in public spaces.
