Young Guns Bloc Shines in 19th Congress
President’s son and Ilocos Norte 1st district Rep. Sandro Marcos, along with his fellow Young Guns bloc members, earned widespread praise for their dynamic role in the recently concluded 19th Congress. As the Young Guns bloc made their mark, House Speaker Martin Romualdez highlighted their achievements during his speech on the final plenary session held on June 11.
Rep. Marcos, 31, held the position of senior deputy majority leader throughout the 19th Congress. Speaker Romualdez commended the group, saying, “To our Young Guns — special shoutout to our SDML, congressman Ferdinand [Alexander Sandro] Marcos—our young lawmakers who brought innovation, passion, and purpose to this chamber.” He emphasized that their efforts prove the future of the House is bright and that courage isn’t limited by age.
“You have proven that the future of the House is bright. You showed that courage has no age, and that fresh ideas can thrive within the walls of tradition,” Romualdez added, raising his hand to acknowledge the applause for Rep. Marcos and the bloc.
Youthful Energy Driving Change
The Speaker captured the spirit of the group by stating, “Ang kabataan ng Kamara, hindi lang pag-asa ng bayan — katuwang na sa paggawa ng pagbabago.” This means the youth in Congress are not just the hope of the nation but active partners in driving change.
Formed during the 19th Congress, the Young Guns bloc is composed of mostly new, yet promising, legislators. Despite their relative inexperience, they quickly demonstrated their capability to lead important legislative tasks and investigations. This was especially notable amid intense criticism faced by the institution.
Looking Ahead to the 20th Congress
Having earned respect and proven their mettle, many Young Guns members secured fresh mandates in the recent midterm elections. Now, they stand ready to make an even bigger impact in the 20th Congress. Their blend of innovation and youthful energy continues to inspire hope for meaningful reforms within the House of Representatives.
The group’s success highlights the importance of fresh perspectives in government, showing that new voices can coexist with tradition to create progress. Local leaders noted that the Young Guns’ rise signals a promising shift toward more inclusive and dynamic governance.
