Young Guns Endorse New PNP Chief Nicolas Torre III
Members of the House “Young Guns” bloc have expressed strong support for Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Nicolas Torre III, highlighting his unyielding determination and bravery as his key strengths. This backing reflects their confidence in the new leader’s ability to steer the police force effectively during challenging times.
“We are fully and 100% behind President Bongbong Marcos’ decision to appoint Gen. Torre as PNP Chief. Sa panahong kailangan natin ng matatag at makataong pamumuno sa hanay ng kapulisan, ito ay isang malinaw na mensahe: we are in good, capable hands,” the young lawmakers said in a joint statement released Thursday afternoon, May 29. (In times when we need strong and compassionate leadership within the ranks of the police, this is a clear message: we are in good, capable hands.)
This statement came from representatives of various districts and party-lists, including Lanao del Sur 1st district, Zambales 1st district, La Union 1st district, and the Manila 1st district, among others.
Emphasizing Integrity and Courage in Leadership
The Young Guns praised Torre’s firm stance on discipline and justice. “Unbending ang kanyang paninindigan, kaya kailangan natin ng ganitong klaseng lider sa ating PNP. Kahit sino pa ang sangkot o gaano pa kataas na tao, hindi siya bumibigay. Ito ay patunay ng kanyang integridad at dedikasyon sa serbisyo,” they emphasized when describing Torre’s character. (His resolve is unbending, which is why we need this kind of leader in our PNP. No matter who is involved or how high-ranking they may be, he does not back down. This is a testament to his integrity and dedication to service.)
Their support comes amid reports of Torre’s notable role in law enforcement, including his assistance in the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte in cooperation with international police forces last March.
Commitment to Justice and Police Reform
The Young Guns view Torre’s appointment as a clear sign of dedication to justice and the rule of law. They highlighted his career marked by bravery, honesty, and a relentless pursuit of justice. “His career has been defined by courage, integrity and an unyielding commitment to justice. We believe his leadership will inspire confidence not only within the PNP but also among the Filipino people,” the lawmakers added.
Currently serving as the director of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), Torre is an alumnus of the Philippine National Police Academy class of 1993. He has also led the Quezon City Police District and the Davao Regional Police Office, gaining extensive experience in diverse policing environments.
Building a Transparent and Community-Focused Police Force
The Young Guns expressed optimism that under Torre’s leadership, the PNP will transform further into a transparent, community-oriented institution. “We look forward to a PNP that not only enforces the law but also earns the trust and respect of the communities it serves,” they stated.
They also called on the public to rally behind the new chief’s efforts to promote positive change and strengthen the police force’s relationship with the Filipino people.
