Youth Science Discovery Program Launches Nationwide

Youth Science Discovery Program Empowers Filipino Youth

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has taken a significant step to enrich the lives of young Filipinos in its managed centers and residential care facilities (CRCFs). It has teamed up with ScienceKonek, a youth-led media group, to bring the Youth Science Discovery Program (YSDP) to its centers nationwide. This initiative aims to spark interest and knowledge in science and technology among vulnerable youth.

Secretary Rex Gatchalian officially signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with ScienceKonek’s founding president, Ralph Lauren Abainza, on August 4 at the DSWD Central Office in Quezon City. This partnership marks the start of a program designed to deliver hands-on science workshops, training sessions, interactive activities, and mentorship opportunities to young residents.

Hands-On Science to Ignite Curiosity

The DSWD highlighted that the Youth Science Discovery Program will initially roll out in the Nayon ng Kabataan facility and gradually expand to other CRCFs across the country. By doing so, the agency hopes to open doors for young people to explore science and technology, equipping them with valuable skills and knowledge for the future.

ScienceKonek, as described on its official Facebook page, serves as a bridge linking science with the Filipino community. It focuses on creating accessible, youth-friendly science content tailored specifically for residential care sectors. This collaboration underscores the importance of making science education approachable and engaging for all youth, especially those in vulnerable situations.

The new program promises to offer more than just theoretical lessons. With its emphasis on interactive and practical experiences, mentees will gain firsthand understanding and appreciation of scientific concepts. Local leaders noted that such programs play a crucial role in inspiring confidence and broadening horizons among young Filipinos.

Expanding Opportunities for Vulnerable Youth

As the Youth Science Discovery Program grows, it aims to reach more centers nationwide, fostering a culture of curiosity and innovation among the youth under DSWD’s care. This initiative is expected to strengthen the agency’s commitment to holistic development, ensuring that every young person has access to quality education and opportunities regardless of their background.

By integrating science and technology education into residential care, the program aligns with broader national goals of uplifting disadvantaged youth. Sources said this initiative could serve as a model for similar collaborations in the future, highlighting the power of partnership in advancing youth development.
