Massive Seizure of Suspected Shabu in Zamboanga City
Authorities in Zamboanga City intercepted a significant shipment of suspected shabu, seizing approximately 67 kilograms on the evening of August 19, 2025. This large drug bust followed a tense chase that culminated in a ricefield in Bunguiao village.
Police Regional Office-Zamboanga (PRO-9) spokesperson Major Shellamie Chang confirmed that operatives had been tracking the transport of the illegal substances via a coastal village along the city’s west coast. The suspected shabu was then loaded onto a sports utility vehicle bound to leave the city.
Police Pursuit and Interception at Mobile Checkpoint
Once the vehicle was identified, local law enforcement and the Regional Drug Enforcement Unit-9 (RDEU-9) established a mobile checkpoint in Bunguiao village to intercept the shipment. Upon spotting the police presence, the vehicle’s driver attempted to evade authorities by speeding past the checkpoint, triggering a high-stakes chase.
The pursuit ended around 8:30 p.m. when the vehicle crashed into a ricefield. Authorities arrested the unnamed driver, a Zamboanga City resident, along with two passengers — a woman from Pagadian City and another individual. Community members noted that the passengers were injured and immediately taken to a nearby hospital, while the driver remained in police custody.
Record-Breaking Drug Haul Valued Near P500 Million
Officials estimated the seized methamphetamine’s value at close to P500 million, marking it as the largest drug haul recorded in the region to date. Brigadier General Eleazar Matta, PRO-9 director, praised the efforts of the RDEU-9 and Zamboanga City police for their successful operation.
Matta also highlighted concerns that the illegal drug supply was not solely destined for Zamboanga City or the Zamboanga Peninsula but may have been distributed to neighboring regions as well. The bust represents a significant blow to drug trafficking networks operating in the area.
Ongoing Efforts to Combat Illegal Drug Trade
Local leaders and law enforcement agencies continue to intensify their fight against the illegal drug trade in Mindanao. This recent seizure demonstrates the commitment of authorities to disrupt drug supply chains and protect communities from the harmful effects of narcotics.
Police and regional officials remain vigilant, monitoring coastal routes and transport vehicles to prevent further drug smuggling attempts. The collaboration between local police units and regional drug enforcement teams has proven crucial in achieving these results.
