Zamboanga City HIV Cases Rise: 20 Monthly Infections Reported

Steady Increase in Zamboanga City HIV Cases

Zamboanga City has seen a concerning rise in HIV infections, with an average of 20 new cases reported each month during the first quarter of 2025. This steady increase in Zamboanga City HIV cases highlights the urgent need for enhanced awareness and medical interventions.

City Health Officer Dr. Dulce Miravite shared that from January to March alone, 62 HIV cases were documented. This number sharply contrasts with just 11 cases recorded in the same period a decade earlier in 2015. Tragically, six individuals have already died due to complications related to the disease.

Hospital Reports Confirm Rising Trend

Further insights came from Dr. Nazra Jumaani, head of Infectious and Tropical Diseases at Zamboanga City Medical Center, who reported a total of 93 HIV cases from January through May 2025. Monthly data showed 23 cases in January, 20 in February, 12 in March, 20 in April, and 17 in May.

Most patients fall within the 18 to 27 age group, indicating a vulnerable young population. Dr. Jumaani explained that many were initially admitted for respiratory symptoms, only to be diagnosed with HIV after further testing. This pattern suggests delayed detection and the necessity for more proactive screening.

Addressing the HIV Challenge in Zamboanga City

Local health authorities emphasize the importance of education, early testing, and treatment access to curb the rise in HIV infections. Advocates call for stronger community outreach programs tailored to at-risk groups, especially young adults.

The increase in Zamboanga City HIV cases serves as a call to action for both government agencies and the public. Timely intervention and comprehensive support can help reduce transmission rates and save lives.
