Massive Smuggled Cigarettes Bust in Zamboanga City
Authorities in Zamboanga City successfully intercepted over P43 million worth of smuggled cigarettes near Sta. Cruz Island on Wednesday. This significant seizure of smuggled cigarettes disrupted illegal trade in the region, sources said.
Col. Fidel Fortaleza, acting director of the Zamboanga City Police Office, disclosed that two motorboats bearing the names “AISHA” and “SALWA” were caught during a seaborne patrol operation. Both vessels were loaded with the contraband cigarettes.
Six Crew Members Arrested During Operation
Each boat carried three individuals, all of whom were apprehended by law enforcement. “A total of six crew were arrested and turned over to Police Station 11 (Central) for further investigation and disposition,” Fortaleza stated.
The Bureau of Customs (BOC) Port of Zamboanga led the inventory process, revealing more than 700 master cases of various cigarette brands onboard. The total estimated market value of the seized contraband reached P43,030,248.
Contraband and Vessels Turned Over to Authorities
Following the operation, the confiscated cigarettes and the two motorboats were handed over to BOC-Port of Zamboanga. Meanwhile, the arrested suspects remain in custody at Zamboanga City Police Station 11 (Central) as authorities continue their investigation into the smuggling operation.
Local officials highlighted the importance of such enforcement actions to curb illegal smuggling activities that undermine government revenue and public health.
