Zamboanga City Seizes 89 Kilograms Meth in Record Bust

Massive 89 Kilograms Meth Seizure in Zamboanga City

Authorities in Zamboanga City successfully seized 89 kilograms meth during a well-coordinated entrapment operation early Sunday morning. This significant drug bust marks the largest haul of illegal methamphetamine recorded in the city to date.

The seized contraband is estimated to be worth PHP 605.2 million, highlighting the scale of the operation and the ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking in the region. Officials reported that the operation took place in Barangay Rio Hondo, where law enforcement agents conducted a checkpoint and subsequent arrest.

Details of the Arrest and Contraband Discovery

Brigadier General Eleazar Matta, director of the Police Regional Office in the Zamboanga Peninsula, confirmed that the 89 kilograms meth were confiscated from three suspects after a brief chase. The men, identified only as Wang Yu, 53, from Isabela City in Basilan; John, 27, of Barangay Suterville, and Addil, 41, of Barangay Mariki, both from Zamboanga City, attempted to evade the checkpoint but were apprehended.

Matta explained that the illegal drugs were cleverly concealed inside four ice chests and wrapped in Chinese tea bags, likely to avoid detection. The suspects were immediately taken into custody for further investigation.

Context: Previous Meth Seizure in Zamboanga City

This recent seizure follows another major bust just over a week ago, when authorities confiscated 67 kilograms meth—valued at approximately PHP 455.6 million. That operation took place in Barangay Bunguiao and involved the interception of drugs being transported out of the city.

Community members noted that these large-scale seizures are part of intensified efforts by local law enforcement to dismantle drug networks operating within and around Zamboanga City. The scale of these operations underscores the persistent challenges posed by illegal drug trafficking in the area.

Authorities’ Commitment to Drug War

Local leaders emphasized the police force’s commitment to sustaining pressure against narcotics syndicates. The 89 kilograms meth seizure represents a significant victory in the ongoing campaign to secure safer communities.

Officials reported that investigations are ongoing as they seek to identify the larger network behind the illegal drug shipments. Meanwhile, the suspects remain in custody as authorities prepare charges against them.
